- Tingling, burning or shooting pain — often before the rash appears
- A rash of fluid-filled blisters, usually on one side of the body or face
- Sensitivity to touch in the affected area
- Feeling generally unwell or feverish
What we do
Come in as soon as possible. Antiviral medication is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. Our pharmacist can prescribe antivirals and advise on pain management.

When to seek other help
This service may not be suitable in the following situations — please seek the appropriate care instead:
- Rash affecting the eye, nose tip or forehead (ophthalmic shingles — go to A&E)
- Rash near the ear with facial weakness or hearing changes (Ramsay Hunt — go to A&E)
- Under 18 years old
- Pregnant — seek urgent GP or midwife advice
- Severely immunocompromised — seek GP advice before visiting
- Symptoms started more than 72 hours ago (antivirals less effective — still come in for advice)
